ABSTRACT

To what extent is GIS a mature technology? The diffusion process of GIS technology is well underway: the areas in which GIS is applied are widespread. This paper suggests that the degree to which GIS technology has matured, is dependent on a number of factors. These include appropriate functionality, a user-friendly interface, investment costs, education and awareness issues, and data availability. It is argued that the diffusion process between and within organizations is related to the maturity of the GIS technology.
