Tutorial : How to Start Using ArcGIS
by : Bayu Yanuargi (2010)
ArcGIS is a system for people who rely on accurate geographic information to make decisions. It facilitates collaboration and lets you easily author data, maps, globes, and models on the desktop and serve them out for use on a desktop, in a browser, or in the field, depending on the needs of your organization.
ArcGIS helps you with
- Asset/data management including systems integration, claims/case management, service/territory area management, and constituent/customer management
- Planning and analysis such as forecasting and risk analysis
- Business operations such as call center/dispatching; monitoring and tracking; field data collection; inspections, maintenance and operations; and routing
- Situational awareness including decision support and customer/public access
1. Mapping Concept in ArcGIS
First you must build a geodatabase to save and manage your data.
The geodatabase offers you the ability to
- Store a rich collection of spatial data in a centralized location.
- Apply sophisticated rules and relationships to the data.
- Define advanced geospatial relational models (e.g., topologies, networks).
- Maintain integrity of spatial data with a consistent, accurate database.
- Work within a multiuser access and editing environment.
- Integrate spatial data with other IT databases.
- Easily scale your storage solution.
- Support custom features and behavior.
- Leverage your spatial data to its full potential.
Geodatabase will be build in ArcCatalog, that include in your ArcGIS Package.
After you done to build Geodatabase, you can Create and edit your map USING ArcMAP.
High-end cartography—Create professional-quality, publication-ready maps with simple wizards, predefined map templates, an extensive suite of map elements, and advanced drawing and symbolization tools.
- Apply cartographic text and labeling for atlaslike, publication-quality maps.
- Design customized symbols, thematic categories, and style sheets for your map products.
- Reduce manual editing time using intelligent rule-based annotation and label placement.
- Use the functionality of the Maplex for ArcGIS extension (included with ArcInfo) for sophisticated annotation and label placemen
2. Begin Creating Geodatabe
In this capter you will doing 3 steps :
a. Creating Personal Geodatabase. The main folder of ArcGIS Geodatabase
b. Creating Feature Dataset. The Sub Folder of ArcGIS Geodatabase
c. Creating Featur Class. The data (Point / Line / Polygon)
Open your ArcCatalog on your arcgis Start Menu, After that you must create a new folder and rename the new folder. Follow this step
a. Creating Personal Geodatabase
b. Creating Feature Dataset
c. Creating Feature Class
CLICK NEXT –> NEXT –> FINISH
Ok, you have successfully created your own database, you can repeat the step to build others data like river, landuse, city, etc
3. Begin Create The data (On Screen Digitization)
To create the data you must use ArcMAP on your ArcGIS Start Menu. And you will use the feature class that you have created in the arccatalog.
If you want to digitize the map from hardcopy source, you must scan the hardcopy map and open it in the arcMap.
The hardcopy map that you scan, of course doesn’t have any projection, so you must do projection correstion for that map
a. Add Hardcopy Map to ArcMap
b. Geometri Correction (Add projection Unit to your hardcopy map)
Minimum Number of point is four, with a spread position in whole of map
After you finishing the coordinate input, you can appear and edit the coordinat. If not you must update the coordinate so the coordinate will be save in to your image
Now after the source is correct we can start to create a map, add your map that you have created in arccatalog to the ArcMap
Now you must appear the editor toolbars, Follow this step
Begin create the map, follow this step
click on pencils pict to draw in the map. begin drawing in the map using pencil
After you finish to create the data, you must stop editing : EDITOR –> STOP EDITING and save your data
Now you have finished to create data with ArcGIS, It’s very simple is it ?
After this i will teach you, how to editing the data that you have finished, may be tomorrow ???? : >
